NEURO AFFIRMATION POLICY FREEFRAME MAY2026

Taking a trauma informed and neuro affirmative approach

Trauma statement

  • Freeframe will be taking a non-pathologizing trauma informed approach which acknowledges that trauma responses are normal reactions to abnormal situations. This shifts the focus from individual pathology to the impacts of the trauma experience. It emphasises that individuals respond to trauma in the best way they can given their circumstances and avoids labelling these responses as symptoms of a disorder. It focuses on understanding the impact of trauma on biology, psychology and social context and promotes strength based collaborative and empowering therapeutic relationships.
  • This relies on a collaborative person-centred relationship where the individual is seen as the expert on their own experience. It also relies on prioritising creating a safe and supportive environment where comfortable feel safe exploring their experiences without judgement or re traumatization.
  • This moves away from the medical model which responds with diagnosis and treatments for mental illness. This approach that labels and treats distress and suffering as a pathology can cause iatrogenic harm.

Neuro affirmative statement

  • The importance of autistic and Neurodivergent professionals as integral to the Freeframe team
  • accommodations versus reasonable adjustments

Presume Competence: We operate on the principle that every individual can process and understand information, regardless of how pronounced their differences may be. This mindset ensures that people are always approached with respect and trust in their abilities, avoiding assumptions that reduce their agency or potential. By presuming competence, support is provided in a way that honours the person’s inherent dignity and allows for authentic participation and engagement.

Identity Over Pathology: Autistic/neurodivergent differences are valid—we avoid pathologising and use ‘trait’ instead of ‘symptom’.

Decline Approaches Based on Compliance: “We avoid ABA and similar behavioural techniques that promote masking or put neurotypical expectations above the individual’s welfare.”

Respect Communication and Social Differences: “We recognise and value diverse communication styles, including non-speaking and atypical interactions, without mandating neurotypical social behaviours.”

Prioritize Autonomy and Self-Advocacy: “We support individuals’ goals and choices, rather than aiming for them to match their peers.”

Respect Neurodivergence: “We recognise and appreciate stimming, special interests, and sensory needs”.

Double Empathy Problem: “Communication differences are a mutual responsibility, not a deficit within the neurodivergent person”.

Support Over Masking: “We aim to lessen environmental stress and enhance quality of life instead of encouraging children and adult to conceal their traits.”
